Sikh misconceptions

May 7, 2008 / by longshanks

"Just because a Sikh wears a turban does not mean he is associated with the Taliban". These were the words of one of the individuals who shared with the audience his beliefs and why he is a Sikh. When the audience heard this, there was a nervous laughter coursing through the room. While it is my impression that if I see a person wearing I turban, my immediate reaction is not "oh no, its the Taliban! run!" it is of course more reasonable than that. Perhaps they felt that they are some people out there who made quick judgments towards others different than them.

During World War II, Japanese living in America were ostracized, imprisoned, and generally looked down upon. While that was generations ago, racism and discrimination is still alive and well unfortunately. Since 9/11, tensions between the East and West have been undoubtedly strained. It is my guess that many Americans still feel resentment towards any person who may or may not resemble a person of Middle Eastern descent.

Despite the obvious allusions towards ignorance and racism, the speech given by the moderators was very informative and easy to understand. I felt a sense of camaraderie; something that is rare these days. It almost seemed like an arm reaching out to the West and asking for their understanding. A lot of the people in the audience had some very detailed questions regarding the Sikh religion as well as being very informed.

For the session, Dan Veidlinger, professor of Eastern Religions, helped serve as a moderator. His role also comprised of reading The Sikh Experience. Dan is also a very jolly fellow and his ability to make things light out of a tough issue really helped the audience loosen up.

According to Sikh traditions, the wearing of the turban identifies commitment to the Guru and the Sikhs. Other representations of the turban include royalty, service, and uniqueness. So while some may think other ill-thoughts about our fellow Sikh Americans, dialogs such as these will certainly help bridge the divide that has held us apart.

There couldn't be more difference between two groups than between the Taliban and the Sikhs. These are kind and spiritual people and very loyal...the kind of people we would want as Americans. Some of those who wear turbans must have been very frightened right after 9/11. And there were stories of hate crimes against them in the mid-west. Some people are so frightened (and angry with) anything that looks arab or middle-eastern they don't bother to look at the person...the human being in front of them. Someday maybe human beings will learn. I hope.
